Greyhound Racing SA

Ownership

Greyhound racing provides a fast, exciting and entertaining sport.  Have you considered getting involved by enjoying the thrill of owning and racing your own greyhound?

The financial rewards for being an industry participant within the Greyhound Racing industry is enticing with stake money in 2009/2010 for South Australia exceeding $4 million.

Getting Started

Step One

The first thing you need - is a greyhound. And the experts are waiting to help you. See Greyhound Directory.

Purchasing a greyhound pup could cost you between $500 and $6,000 depending on the current age and of course the breeding of that dog. Incidentally, several of the classic greyhounds of recent years were originally bought for modest sums and have since won many thousands of dollars for their owners.

Registered Breeders and Trainers will be happy to advise you which greyhounds are available, their prices, ages and other necessary details, as well as offer the benefits of their vast greyhound racing experience in the form of guidance and helpful advice.

Step Two

Before you purchase your new greyhound, you need to make a decision on how you want to own the dog.  For example, as a sole owner, partnership or syndicate.

You have three options when deciding to become an owner: Sole ownership, Partnership (2 people) or Syndicate (3-20 people).

Simply choose the option that suits you and follow the application process accordingly.

Please note that to form a Partnership or Syndicate you must first be a registered owner with Greyhound Racing SA.

Once your application has been processed you will receive your member card in the mail.

Steps involved in becoming an owner:

Option 1. Sole Owner

Option 2. Forming a Partnership

Option 3. Forming a Syndicate

Step Three

Having acquired your greyhound it is necessary to comply with a number of requirements before it is eligible to race. In every instance it will have to be registered with the Greyhound Racing Controlling body in the State of its birth. Every registered greyhound has its very own identity certificate.  This records the dog’s physical details, colour, markings and other particulars which is held by the trainer and taken to the race track to enable correct identification and prevent the inclusion of a wrong greyhound in a race.

Step Four

Owners may place their greyhounds with a Licensed Trainer. They feed, groom, condition and train your greyhound for around $70 to $100 per week.

The agreement you reach with the Trainer over payment of prize money for his/her effort is open to negotiation, but as an indication, some trainers receive a percentage share of the prize money won.

An owner can if he or she wishes, apply to Greyhound Racing SA for an Owner-Trainer license which permits he or she to train any self-owned greyhounds.
